BUG DAY! 2008
April 5, beginning at 10:00 am marked the kick off to the opening of Flatrun Speedway and the 2008 racing season.
As the morning started out a cloudy and breezy 40 something degrees, karts, drivers and bundled up pit crews showed up for the day of no-points racing. Getting underway around 1:00 pm, the sun began to make it's appearance- raising the temperature and spirits!
In the week before Flatrun Speedway's opening, a number of folks showed to assist with the re-claying of the track, general maintenance, providiing and placing hay bales, grating the track surface, improving track lighting and upgrading the electrical service. Thanks to all you guys!
Familiar faces, from the very newest to the "well seasoned" fans were among Flatrun Speedway's Bug Day patrons.
Glad to see the trailers of karts and cars of pit crews rolling in, Stub Raymond handled the Flatrun Speedway ticket sales and kart registrations.
Tom Shirey Sr. continues as Flatrun Speeday's track promoter for the 2008 racing season as well as Tom Shirey Jr. serving as Flatrun Speedways track organizer.
Helen Shirey will continue to provide support in the numerous busy areas needing assistance to insure smooth running of the track.
Thanks to Ellen, Rebecca and TomiLee Shirey, with help from Jodi Parks, the consession stand was in full swing selling lots of piping hot burgers, fries, hot dogs, sloppy joes and cocoa, just to name a few. In addition, there also are plenty of nachos, cheese sticks, fried mushrooms and a wide variety of candy and snacks available.
A lot of young fans seemed to have plenty of fun either in the sand pit below the announcer's booth or with the "mother-nature-provided" fun of M-U-D!!!
Here you see Josh Spicer with a big cup full of spring that he called "the super duper very thick Flatrun Speedway limited edition coffee" um... you first and let us know how it tasted!!
Did you know that Flatrun Speedway has some of the best cheering teams? First I came across Ashley and Nichole Ishler.
"Team Eminhizer", composed of dad Mike and son Christopher, whooped it up for a bit from the grandstand seating!
This is Elijah Croyle after doing the not-yet-famous Mud Stomp dance in a conveniently available puddle not far off. Mom Jaime wasn't as enthusiastic with the celebration!
A very strange phenomenon developed among most of the young crowd Saturday. You can see here that "Ring-Pop-Mouth" was readily apparent but easily cured with a good cold soda available from Flatrun Speedway's conession stand.
This year, Melissa Young takes on the challenge of scoring for Flatrun Speedway's 2008 season.
A big welcome back goes out to Miranda Perring, who will again be the Flatrun Speedway's flag official. In addition, Miranda owns The Trophy Zone which provides all of the great tropies and awards for the racers.
A huge thank you is dished out to Howie Grove for being the "sniper photographer" at the track capturing numerous most awesome photos all day on Bug Day!
Very special thank you to Dave Croyle for providing EMT service on Saturday! (oh, and again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! wi-hoooo!!)
So, as Flatrun Speedway's opener and Bug Day finished out, I started the drive home and saw the beautiful strawberry sunset resting on the trees and heard the peeper frogs singing their evening lullaby, I realized something: No doubt about it, it's finally SPRING!!
Play fair, go fast and keep turning left!,
